DRC Government Suspends Eastern Universities Citing Collaboration with M23 Rebels

The Democratic Republic of Congo government ordered the suspension of eleven public universities in Goma and Bukavu on September 1, accusing the institutions of falling under the administrative control of M23 rebels. Kinshasa concurrently froze the salaries of 48 staff members accused of pledging allegiance to the AFC/M23 coalition. The rebel movement responded by declaring the government order null and void, promising to pay the affected salaries and instructing classes to continue as normal in occupied territories.
