Magnitude 6.7 earthquake strikes Ayacucho region of Peru
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Ayacucho department in southern Peru on the afternoon of August 20, 2026, with damage assessments continuing through August 21. Preliminary reports indicate at least three people were injured and 22 homes were damaged or destroyed. Six schools and 12 medical centers also sustained structural damage. The epicenter was located 35 kilometers north of Coracora at a depth of 108 kilometers, with tremors felt strongly in the capital city, Lima.
