Sudanese Armed Forces Recapture Khartoum Amid Ongoing RSF Siege of El-Obeid

In a significant shift in the Sudanese civil war, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) confirmed the recapture of the capital, Khartoum, as of August 17, 2026. However, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) maintain control over much of the Darfur region and have intensified their siege of El-Obeid. The fall of El-Obeid would provide the RSF with a direct corridor to the capital. The conflict continues to drive massive displacement, with thousands fleeing recent drone strikes in North Kordofan.
