Alliance of Sahel States (AES) Finalizes Operational Framework for 5,000-Strong Unified Force
Defence ministers from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger met in Ouagadougou on August 16 to finalize the legal and operational foundations of the AES Unified Force. The 5,000-soldier battalion is designed for rapid cross-border intervention against JNIM and ISGS militants. This development follows a surge in insurgent pressure on border zones and the reported withdrawal of remaining Russian Wagner/Africa Corps elements from northern Mali. The force aims to secure key transit corridors without reliance on Western security frameworks.
