M23 Rebels Recapture Villages in North Kivu Following Counteroffensive
M23 rebels seized control of the villages of Kasenyi and Luke in the Masisi territory of North Kivu on August 13 after a fierce counteroffensive against the Congolese army (FARDC) and Wazalendo militias. The rebel advance follows the killing of M23's military spokesperson, Willy Ngoma, by a Congolese drone strike earlier this week. Civilians have begun fleeing the Masisi territory toward Goma as fighting intensifies near the mining hub of Rubaya.
