Haiti Urges UN to Renew Gang Suppression Force Mandate Amid Election Push

During a United Nations Security Council session on August 2, 2026, Haitian Foreign Minister Raina Forbin urged the international community to renew the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF). The mandate is currently set to expire on September 30. Forbin emphasized that a full deployment of the 5,500-member force is essential to creating an "acceptable security environment" for national elections scheduled for December 13. Gangs currently control roughly 80% of the capital, displacing over 1.5 million people.
