Wide-Scale Iranian Cyber Attack Targets Minnesota Water Infrastructure
Iranian-affiliated threat actors launched a coordinated cyber attack against dozens of water systems in Minnesota on August 2. The attackers successfully exploited programmable logic controllers (PLCs) governing physical water treatment processes. CISA issued a critical advisory identifying this as the widest attack on US water infrastructure to date, appearing as a retaliatory measure following recent US-Israeli operations against Iranian military assets. No contamination or service outages were reported as of the evening of August 2.
