IAEA Flags Increased Military Risks Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi issued an urgent update on July 31 warning that increased military activity near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is further challenging efforts to maintain safety. The warning comes after recent Russian missile and drone strikes across the Dnipropetrovsk and Kyiv regions heightened concerns of accidental damage to the facility. Grossi reiterated that any attack against nuclear infrastructure violates international humanitarian law and risks a large-scale radiological incident.
