M23 Rebels Capture Strategic Commercial Center of Kirumba in Eastern DRC
Following the fall of Kanyabayonga, M23 rebel forces successfully occupied Kirumba in North Kivu province. Kirumba is a major commercial center with a population of over 120,000, and its seizure allows the group to control trade routes heading north toward Butembo and Beni. The Congolese army reportedly withdrew from the town after heavy clashes, leading to a significant increase in civilian displacement as thousands flee toward northern Lubero territory to escape the rebel advance.
