Sahel States Formally Initiate Withdrawal from the ICC
Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger deposited formal notifications with the United Nations to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) between June 24 and July 1. The ICC confirmed on Wednesday that the one-year withdrawal process has been initiated. The military-led regimes accused the court of being a tool of neocolonialism, while human rights groups warned the move would entrench impunity for ongoing atrocities in the Sahel region.
