Xenophobic Protests and Violence Displace Thousands in South Africa
South Africa has been gripped by a rising tide of xenophobic violence spearheaded by an anti-immigrant movement called "March and March," which set a June 30 deadline for undocumented migrants to leave. Protesting mobs burned businesses and attacked foreign nationals, leading to the deaths of at least three migrants (from Malawi and Mozambique). The violence forced thousands of migrants to camp out in Durban and hundreds of Zimbabweans to shelter outside their consulate in Cape Town.
