British Royal Navy Intercepts Russian Shadow Fleet Oil Tanker in English Channel

For the first time in 2026, British forces intercepted a Russian 'shadow fleet' vessel attempting to pass through the English Channel. The Cameroonian-flagged tanker Smyrtos, which is under UK sanctions for suspected ties to the Russian state, was detained on June 14. The vessel was moved to an anchorage off the south coast of England for inspection. Ship-tracking data showed other shadow fleet tankers abruptly changed course following the interception.
