Renewed gang attacks in Cité Soleil displace thousands
In late May 2026, severe gang violence erupted in the Cité Soleil district of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's largest slum. According to a June 5 report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the renewed armed attacks displaced more than 18,000 people within a matter of days. The violent gang territorial seizures forced families to wade through the sea and mud to escape, pushing the total number of internally displaced people in the capital to a record high.
