Russia Rejects Ukrainian Peace Proposal at St. Petersburg Forum
Russian President Vladimir Putin formally rejected an open letter from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on June 5, 2026, which proposed direct peace talks to end the five-year conflict. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin characterized the proposal as insincere and claimed a ceasefire would only serve to stop Russian military advances. Zelenskyy responded by stating that Moscow had once again chosen escalation over diplomacy, as fighting continues along the front lines.
