US Treasury Sanctions M23 and FDLR Intelligence Leaders
The United States imposed sanctions on June 4, 2026, against Gustave Kubwayo of the FDLR and John Imani Nzenze, the chief of intelligence for the M23 rebel group. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that these individuals are responsible for coordinating horrific violence and human rights abuses in eastern DRC. The sanctions, which include asset freezes and financial restrictions, aim to increase pressure on armed groups as the 2025 Washington Accords fail to halt fighting.
