Serbian UNIFIL Peacekeeper Killed by Mortar Fire in Southern Lebanon
Sergeant Milovan Jovanović of Serbia's 27th Mechanized Battalion died on June 4, 2026, from critical injuries after a mortar shell struck his UNIFIL position near Marjayoun. Two other peacekeepers from El Salvador and Spain were injured but are reported to be in stable condition. Initial assessments indicate the indirect fire originated from north of the Litani River. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack as a grave violation of international law.
