Hospital Attack in Ituri Province Amid DRC M23 Conflict and Ebola Outbreak
On May 28, 2026, residents in Ituri province attacked and torched tents at Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital, which was housing Ebola patients. One patient died in the fire while others fled the facility. The WHO warned that the M23 rebel conflict in eastern DRC is creating a catastrophic collision with the deadly Bundibugyo Ebola strain, as fighting and community mistrust obstruct health workers. M23 continues to control major portions of North and South Kivu, further complicating humanitarian access to the outbreak zone.
