Myanmar Junta Consolidates Border Towns and Offers Peace Negotiations
Following the recapture of the strategic border towns Tonzang and Mawtaung, Myanmar's military-backed government under President Min Aung Hlaing invited armed resistance groups to new peace talks on May 24, 2026. The military has regained significant momentum since mid-2025 due to conscription-driven troop increases and China-brokered localized ceasefires. However, the National Unity Government and major ethnic armed organizations remain skeptical, as the military continues to hold only about 21 percent of national territory amid ongoing clashes in Chin and Tanintharyi.
