Myanmar Military Seizes Strategic Thai Border Hub Mawdaung, Displacing 4,000
The Myanmar military successfully recaptured the strategic Thai border trade hub of Mawdaung in the Tanintharyi Region on May 20, 2026, following a 15-day counteroffensive. The town, previously held by Karen National Union (KNU)-led resistance forces since November 2023, was retaken using a three-pronged assault supported by heavy artillery and daily airstrikes. Resistance sources confirmed at least 24 fighters were killed during the operation, which forced approximately 4,000 residents from ten local villages to flee toward the border.
