Ebola Outbreak Reaches Rebel-Held Goma, Prompting Rwandan Border Closure

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency on May 19, 2026, as a rare Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak reached Goma, a city of over one million people currently controlled by the M23 rebel group. In response to the first confirmed case in Goma, Rwanda immediately suspended cross-border traffic. The M23 administration in Goma has reportedly established isolation centers and commenced contact-tracing operations, while the death toll in the eastern DRC has risen to at least 134.
