United Nations Denounces Myanmar Junta's Controlled Elections as Repressive

The United Nations issued a statement on May 16, 2026, condemning the State Administration Council's (SAC) military-controlled elections which concluded this week. The UN warns that the process, held in only 263 of 330 townships and excluding millions of displaced citizens and ethnic minorities, has further entrenched repression rather than restoring civilian rule. Humanitarian officials noted that the election cycle has exacerbated violence and contributed to the current total of 5.2 million internally displaced persons in Myanmar.
