Yemen Government and Houthis Agree to Large-Scale Prisoner Swap

The internationally recognized government of Yemen and Houthi rebels reached a landmark agreement on May 15, 2026, to release more than 1,600 detainees. The deal, finalized in Amman, Jordan, under the supervision of UN and ICRC officials, represents the largest prisoner exchange in the 11-year Yemeni civil war. Both parties committed to a phased release process for 1,728 individuals. UN mediators expressed hope that this humanitarian breakthrough would serve as a foundation for resuming comprehensive peace talks to end the conflict following years of stalled negotiations.
