M23 Rebel Advances and Drone Strikes Trigger Mass Displacement Near Goma
Fresh fighting between the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group and Congolese government forces in North and South Kivu has triggered a surge in displacement toward the city of Goma. On May 6, reports emerged of new drone strikes hitting residential outskirts, killing at least one humanitarian worker. Thousands of civilians, many already displaced multiple times, are fleeing toward overcrowded camps. The EU has confirmed that a new southern humanitarian corridor is being tested to reach trapped populations in Uvira and Bukavu.
