M23 Rebels Accuse Burundi of Airstrikes Amid Resurgent Kivu Violence
An outbreak of violence in the North and South Kivu provinces of the DRC was reported on May 3, 2026. The M23 rebel group alleged that Burundian forces launched airstrikes against their positions, resulting in 23 deaths. Simultaneously, the Congolese government accused the M23 and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) of executing 11 civilians during a counter-raid. The clashes threaten a fragile peace deal signed in mid-2025 and have reportedly displaced hundreds from rural villages.
