UN Peacekeeping Chief Arrives in M23-Controlled Goma for Ceasefire Assessment
James Swan, the head of the UN mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), arrived in Goma on April 24, 2026, marking his first visit since taking office. Goma, a strategic hub, has been under the control of the M23 rebel group since January 2025. Swan's mission is to assess conditions for effective ceasefire monitoring and facilitate humanitarian access. The visit follows a recent interim agreement between the DRC government and M23 rebels signed in Switzerland to release detainees.
