Sudden Influx of Sudanese Refugees into Birao, CAR
On April 9, 2026, UNifeed reported a significant spike in Sudanese refugees crossing the border into Birao, located in the Vakaga Prefecture of the Central African Republic. Approximately 3,800 new arrivals were recorded over a three-day period, fleeing intensified fighting in Darfur. This influx has doubled the local population of Birao, severely straining local resources and humanitarian bases. The refugees, many having survived traumatic journeys, are arriving in extreme vulnerability as international funding for the CAR response remains critically low.
