Secessionist Clashes in South West State, Somalia
On March 29, 2026, clashes erupted in South West State between Somali National Army forces and local militias attempting to secede and form an independent statelet. The fighting, centered near Barawe, resulted in the displacement of 6,000 civilians. Many fled toward Mogadishu to escape the mortar fire that damaged local markets and government buildings.
