Heavy Clashes in South Sudan Displace 280,000 in Jonglei State
Intense fighting between the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the SPLA-In-Opposition has displaced approximately 280,000 people in Akobo, Jonglei State, as reported on March 31, 2026. Peace monitors from the CTSAMVM warned that the use of heavy weaponry and aerial bombardments by both parties has placed the 2017 permanent ceasefire under immediate threat of collapse. The violence represents a major failure in the implementation of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
