M23 Advance on Sake Triggers Flight of 50,000

On March 25, 2026, M23 rebels backed by AFC forces captured several strategic hills overlooking the town of Sake, North Kivu. The offensive triggered a massive wave of displacement, with an estimated 50,000 people fleeing toward Goma or the Minova area. Local NGOs reported that the exodus began following heavy mortar fire on residential neighborhoods.
