M23 Rebels Capture Minova, Triggering South Kivu Exodus

The M23 insurgent group successfully seized control of Minova in South Kivu after intense fighting with FARDC forces. The advance triggered the displacement of 19,500 people who fled southward toward Bukavu. Many of the displaced traveled by boat across Lake Kivu to avoid rebel checkpoints. Human rights organizations reported that the influx of arrivals has overwhelmed local host communities. This incident marks a significant expansion of the conflict southward from North Kivu into previously stable areas.
