M23 rebels begin strategic withdrawal from North Kivu under Washington Accords
The M23 rebel group, operating under the Congo River Alliance (AFC) banner, began a 30km withdrawal from strategic positions in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo on March 29, 2026. Rebels vacated nearly 10 villages in the Lubero and Walikale territories, regrouping toward Rutshuru. The withdrawal is part of the 'Washington Accords' meant to de-escalate regional tensions. However, local 'Wazalendo' militias have immediately reoccupied several towns, including Kipese and Vukununu, raising concerns among residents regarding the absence of official authority.
