Dissident Taliban Uprising in Badakhshan Nusay District

Intense clashes broke out in the Nusay district of Badakhshan province between Taliban central forces and fighters loyal to dissident commander Juma Khan Fateh. The fighting began Tuesday evening and continued through Wednesday in the mountainous Khughaz area. Disputes reportedly originated from mining rights and the detention of Fateh’s relatives by the provincial governor. Fateh, a former deputy governor of Zabul, claims to command a significant local force. Casualties were reported on both sides as Taliban special forces deployed helicopters for evacuation.
