China Conducts Naval and Air Combat Drills Near Disputed Scarborough Shoal
The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command conducted joint naval and air combat drills near the contested Scarborough Shoal on Saturday. The exercises were described as a response to 'certain countries' undermining regional stability, following the Philippines' recent United Nations bid to extend its seabed rights. Simultaneously, Beijing released new administrative rules for a 'nature reserve' at the shoal, banning unauthorized fishing and mining to consolidate its maritime claims.
