Kampala Summit Extends Somalia AUSSOM Mission by 24 Months
Leaders from troop-contributing countries convened in Kampala to agree on a 18-to-24-month extension of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The decision aims to prevent a security vacuum as Al-Shabaab maintains control over 30% of southern Somalia. The extension comes despite a critical funding crisis triggered by the United States' decision to end logistical support to the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) by the end of 2026.
