M23 rebels seize Uvira in eastern DRC
The Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group launched a rapid territorial offensive in late May, briefly capturing the city of Uvira in South Kivu. The massive localized assault killed approximately 400 people and forced up to 150,000 residents to flee the city and surrounding areas before the rebels eventually withdrew.
