Somali Pirates Hijack Oil Tanker Eureka Off the Coast of Yemen
The Togo-flagged oil tanker Eureka was hijacked by armed men on May 2, 2024, off the coast of Shabwa, Yemen, and was reported diverted toward Somali waters on May 4. The vessel is currently being held for ransom off the coast of Puntland. This incident, the third in recent weeks, has heightened fears of a security vacuum in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Analysts suggest a growing opportunistic collaboration between Somali pirate networks and Yemen-based Houthi rebels amid regional instability.
