Chad to Deploy 1,500 Security Personnel to Haiti to Combat Gang Violence

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby announced on April 20, 2026, the deployment of 1,500 soldiers to Haiti to bolster the United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF). The deployment will consist of two battalions and is intended to assist Haitian police in quelling gang violence that has overrun the capital, Port-au-Prince. Chad already has 400 personnel on the ground. This move follows the launch of the GSF in 2023, which replaced previous international stabilization missions that lacked sufficient resources.
