M23 Capture of Strategic Heights Overlooking Sake
Rebels from the M23 movement seized key positions on the hills surrounding Sake, triggering a panicked exodus. Radio Okapi confirmed that 22,000 individuals fled toward Goma's western fringes to avoid being caught in the crossfire between the rebels and the FARDC. Displacement camps around Goma are now severely overcrowded, with international aid agencies struggling to provide basic sanitation and food to the newly arrived families. Violent clashes were reported throughout the night.
